Why it matters
General George Washington crosses the Delaware River with the Continental Army on the night of 25–26 December 1776, the first move towards a surprise victory over Hessian forces at Trenton. Leutze painted three versions in 1851.
Did you know?
- The original, in the Kunsthalle Bremen, was destroyed in a British bombing raid in 1942.
- Another version hung in the White House West Wing until 2015.
- That smaller version sold at auction in 2022 for $45 million.
