Why it matters

The left panel shows the Fall of Man, the right the Lamentation of Christ. The tempting serpent is a bipedal, salamander-like creature, because it was assumed to walk before God's curse made it crawl.

Did you know?

  • It dates from the second half of the 15th century.
  • It is also called The Fall and Redemption of Man.
  • Saint Genevieve is painted on the back of the left panel.
