Andrea del Verrocchio / David with the Head of Goliath

David with the Head of Goliath

1460 · Bronze

A slight, self-assured young David stands over Goliath's severed head, sword still in hand.

Why it matters

The youthful David stands triumphantly over Goliath's severed head. The bronze was seen as a symbol of Florence, which, like the shepherd boy, was more powerful than it appeared.

Did you know?

  • It was probably made between 1473 and 1475 for the Medici.
  • It is sometimes claimed that Verrocchio's pupil Leonardo da Vinci was the model.
  • The border of David's tunic includes pseudo-Kufic letters imitating Arabic script.
