Why it matters

Venus rises from the sea, her arms raised and her hair in her hands. Ingres began it in Rome in 1808 but completed it only in 1848, inspired partly by Botticelli's Birth of Venus.

Did you know?

  • The banker Benjamin Delessert declined it, finding the knee awkward.
  • It was sold to Frédéric Reiset in 1848.
  • Ingres used the same pose in The Source.
