Why it matters

A nude woman sits with her back to us, in calm and measured sensuality. Widely regarded as Ingres's first great nude, the figure returns in his Turkish Bath half a century later.

Did you know?

  • It was painted in 1808 in Rome.
  • It was originally called Seated Woman.
  • The Goncourt brothers wrote that 'Rembrandt himself would have envied the amber colour of this pale torso'.
