Why it matters
A young woman in a transparent veil lowers her eyes and clasps her fingers tightly, conveying humility and reserve. It is the only known portrait of a woman accepted as an autograph work by Rogier van der Weyden, and it has been called 'famous among all portraits of women of all schools'.
