Why it matters
The crucified Christ is flanked by the Virgin, saints and angels catching his blood in chalices. One of Raphael's earliest works, it was the altarpiece of a wool merchant's burial chapel in Città di Castello.
Did you know?
- It dates from 1502–1503.
- It is named after Ludwig Mond, who bequeathed it to the National Gallery.
- Two of its predella panels are in Lisbon and North Carolina.
