Why it matters
Raphael painted this altarpiece for Sigismondo de' Conti, chamberlain to Pope Julius II. It takes its name from the monastery of St. Anne in Foligno, where it hung for more than two centuries.

- It was first placed on the high altar of Santa Maria in Aracoeli.
