Why it matters
A stormy sky, black crows and a path leading nowhere across a windswept wheat field: painted in July 1890 in the last weeks of Van Gogh's life, it is often called one of his greatest works. It is also often called his last painting, but that is a myth popularised by the film Lust for Life.
Did you know?
- It is painted on a double-square canvas.
- His letters suggest it was finished around 10 July 1890; Tree Roots is more likely his final painting.
- The wheat field fills two thirds of the canvas.
