Why it matters
Van Gogh painted the house on the Place Lamartine in Arles where he rented rooms from May 1888, including the room where Paul Gauguin stayed for nine weeks. The painting maps his daily life: the restaurant where he ate, the railway bridges, even the ditch for the gas pipe.
Did you know?
- The window with both shutters open is the guest room where Gauguin lived.
- The window next to it, with shutters almost closed, is Van Gogh's own bedroom.
- It is also known as The Street.
