Why it matters
Saint Jerome, dressed as a cardinal, reads in his study surrounded by books and objects of late medieval learning, with his pet lion at his feet. The small panel is no larger than an oversized postcard.
Did you know?
- It is dated after Jan van Eyck's death in 1441, so his workshop probably finished it.
- It was bought for Detroit in 1925 as a Petrus Christus.
- Ghirlandaio's Saint Jerome of 1480 is strikingly similar.
