Why it matters
Saint Paul sits holding a thick book, wrapped in a robe with almost sculptural folds. The dramatic light against a dark background shows the young Velázquez's debt to Caravaggio.
Did you know?
- It was painted around 1619 in Seville.
- Velázquez hid most of the legs and hands under the folds, perhaps to hide his limitations.
- It is in the MNAC in Barcelona.
