Why it matters

Ghiberti's second bronze door for the Florence Baptistery is divided into ten square panels of gilded bronze relief with scenes from the Old Testament. Vasari records Michelangelo saying the door was so beautiful it could be the entrance to Paradise.

Did you know?

  • Ghiberti made it between 1425 and 1452.
  • The Arno flood of 4 November 1966 damaged the door.
  • Copies now hang on the Baptistery; the restored originals are in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.
