Why it matters

Jean Fouquet illuminated this book of hours for Étienne Chevalier, treasurer to King Charles VII of France. Chevalier's portrait, name and monogram appear throughout the miniatures.

Did you know?

  • It was commissioned around 1452 and probably completed around 1460.
  • Only 47 miniatures survive, spread over seven collections.
  • Forty of them are in the Musée Condé at Chantilly.
