Why it matters
A scholar in a Japanese-style robe pauses over his maps with a pair of dividers in his hand, looking up towards the window as if struck by a flash of inspiration. It is closely related to Vermeer's The Astronomer, with the same model in the same dress.
Did you know?
- It is one of only three paintings Vermeer signed and dated.
- A 2017 study found that its canvas came from the same bolt as The Astronomer's.
- Vermeer made changes as he worked: the dividers were originally vertical and the head was in a different position.
