Why it matters
Rubens painted this triptych as the funerary monument of his friend and patron Nicolaas Rockox, mayor of Antwerp, and his wife Adriana Perez, whose portraits appear on the outer panels.
Did you know?
- Rubens began it in 1613 and changed the date to 1615 when he finished it.
- The French took it to the Louvre in 1794; it returned in 1815.
- It was made for the Recollects church in Antwerp.
