Why it matters

Salisbury Cathedral is seen from the bishop's garden to the south-east. Commissioned by Constable's close friend John Fisher, Bishop of Salisbury, it is one of his most celebrated works.

  • It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1823.
  • Constable called it 'the most difficult subject in Landscape I ever had upon my Easel'.
