Why it matters

A young mother personifying Charity, naked but for a transparent veil, is surrounded by her children. Cranach, a close friend of Martin Luther, continued to paint such nudes throughout his career.

  • Cranach was court painter to the Electors of Saxony.
  • His later nudes revive a Late Gothic style.
  • It is in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
