Why it matters

Carel Fabritius painted himself shortly after years of working closely with Rembrandt. This 'proto-Romantic' self-portrait has been described as an original, almost nonchalant version of Rembrandt's self-portrait at 34.

Did you know?

  • It dates from around 1647–1648.
  • Its warm colours differ from the bright light of his later Delft works.
  • Until 1985 only three early works by Fabritius were known.
