Why it matters
A woman reclines on her back as a pet parrot alights on her outstretched hand. It was Courbet's first nude to be accepted by the Paris Salon, although her discarded clothes and dishevelled hair were controversial.
Did you know?
- It was shown at the Salon of 1866.
- An earlier nude had been rejected in 1864 as indecent.
- Joanna Hiffernan probably posed for it.
