Theseus raises his club over a centaur he has thrown to the ground, a colossal group Canova made for Napoleon that ended up in Vienna.

Why it matters

Theseus is about to deliver the final blow to the centaur Eurytion, who tried to abduct a bride at a wedding feast. Commissioned in honour of Napoleon, the group was later bought by the Austrian emperor for a temple in Vienna's Volksgarten.

  • It dates from 1805.
  • The Napoleonic Italian Republic commissioned it for ten thousand gold sequins.
  • It moved to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in 1891.
