Joaquín Sorolla / Mother

Mother

1900 · Painting

A mother lies in bed cradling her newborn child, curtained off in soft, private light.

Why it matters

Sorolla's wife Clotilde and their newborn daughter Elena lie in bed, almost completely covered by a white bedspread, only their heads showing. The filtered light and whiteness convey 'the emotion of the father'.

Did you know?

  • It commemorates Elena's birth on 12 July 1895.
  • It was not completed until 1900.
  • Early photographs show Clotilde first looked at the viewer.
