Why it matters

Seurat's mistress Madeleine Knobloch sits powdering herself at a small dressing table. It is his only single-figure portrait, and scientific imaging revealed a hidden self-portrait of Seurat under the paint.

Did you know?

  • It was painted in 1889–1890.
  • Knobloch was probably pregnant with their son at the time.
  • Samuel Courtauld bought it in 1926.
