Why it matters

Men on a flat-bottomed barge dredge sand from the Seine, the ochre sand contrasting with the turquoise water. Unlike most Impressionists, who showed the river as a place of leisure, Sisley painted it as a workplace.

Did you know?

  • It was painted in 1875.
  • The dredging kept the channel open for barges between Le Havre and Paris.
  • Sisley left out the chimney of the town's paper factory.
