Why it matters

A man lifts his lover's arching body into a passionate kiss. Rodin planned the group for The Gates of Hell but left it out because the lovers' happiness did not suit the theme.

Did you know?

  • It dates from around 1884.
  • The woman's torso comes from the Torso of Adele on the Gates of Hell.
