Why it matters

A seething crowd of priests, peasants, beggars, officers and provincial elite follows the icon of Our Lady of Kursk through a dusty landscape. It caused controversy because the icon is held by a man who appears to be drunk.

Did you know?

  • Repin completed it between 1880 and 1883.
  • It highlights perceived abuses by church and state.
  • The procession went from the Korennaya Pustyn Monastery to Kursk.
