Why it matters

Egon Schiele painted his lover and model Wally Neuzil in 1912. The painting became famous for a decade-long legal battle after it was seized in New York in 1998 as possible Nazi loot.

  • Schiele met Wally in 1911, when he was 21 and she was 17.
  • Rudolf Leopold acquired it in 1954.
  • In 2010 the Leopold Museum paid $19 million to the heirs of Lea Bondi Jaray to settle the claims.
