Why it matters

Napoleon surveys the snowy battlefield of Eylau after his costly victory over the Russians in February 1807. It is by far Gros's most realistic depiction of Napoleon and became an icon of emerging French Romanticism.

  • It was painted in the winter of 1807–1808.
  • The battle took place on 7–8 February 1807.
