Why it matters

A newly married couple pose beside an oak tree with the fields of their estate stretching away. Gainsborough combined a double portrait and an English landscape side by side: unique in his work and extremely rare for anyone else.

Did you know?

  • It was painted around 1750.
  • It stayed with the sitters' family until 1960 and was little known before 1927.
  • In 1953 it was one of four paintings chosen to represent British art in Paris for the coronation of Elizabeth II.
  • Gainsborough complained that portraits kept him from his true love, landscape.
