Venus and the Three Graces relieve the war god Mars of his weapons on a cloud high above the world: the last great history painting of David, completed in exile in Brussels.

Why it matters

Venus, the Three Graces and Cupid take away the weapons and armour of Mars, who willingly gives in to her charms. It was David's last painting, begun in exile in Brussels at the age of 73.
