Why it matters

Two rearing horses, each held by a groom, were commissioned by Louis XV for the trough at the entrance to his château de Marly. They were Coustou's last works and replaced two groups by Antoine Coysevox that had been moved to the Tuileries Gardens.

Did you know?

  • They were carved in Carrara marble in 1743–1745.
  • The originals were moved to the place de la Concorde in 1794.
  • They were the central motif of a test card used on TF1 from 1953 to 1983.
