Why it matters

Ninety tin cans, each labelled in four languages as containing 30 grams of the artist's excrement, 'freshly preserved' in May 1961. Manzoni's anti-artwork mocks the art market's hunger for the personal touch of the artist.

Did you know?

  • Manzoni also sold balloons filled with his own breath, Artist's Breath.
  • Each can measures 4.8 by 6.5 centimetres.
  • His friend Enrico Baj called the cans 'an act of defiant mockery of the art world'.
