Gustave Caillebotte / Man at His Bath

Man at His Bath

1884 · Oil on canvas

A naked man dries his back with a towel beside a bathtub, a rare male nude in an everyday setting that was too daring to exhibit in Brussels in 1888.

LocationBoston, United States
Genrenude
Dimensions144.8 × 114.3 cm

Why it matters

A naked man dries himself after a bath, seen from behind, leaving wet footprints on the floor. Male nudes were rare in Impressionist art, and Caillebotte shows an ordinary, vulnerable man rather than an ideal.
