Why it matters
When Van Gogh arrived in Arles in February 1888, the ground was covered in snow after record cold. This view of the snowy La Crau plain, with the snow already beginning to melt, is believed to be one of his first paintings there.

- He wrote to Theo around 24 February 1888 that he had finished 'a landscape in the snow'.
- Montmajour and a line of hills appear on the horizon.
- It is one of at least ten snowy landscapes he painted between 1882 and 1889.
