A page from the Akbarnama, the illustrated chronicle of Emperor Akbar's reign, shows the historian Abul Fazl presenting the finished manuscript to the emperor.

Why it matters

This illustrated manuscript of the history of the Mughal emperor Akbar was made at the Mughal court in Agra. It was copied by the calligrapher Muhammad Husain Kashmiri, honoured by Akbar as 'Golden Pen'.

  • The manuscript is unfinished and ends in 1579.
