The Proposition

Why it matters

A young woman sews intently by candlelight while a man leans over her, hand on her shoulder, offering coins she seems to ignore. Unlike other Dutch 'proposition' paintings, it has been seen as potentially a feminist work.

Did you know?

  • Judith Leyster painted it in 1631, aged 22.
  • The Mauritshuis titles it Man offering money to a young woman.
  • It has been called 'perhaps her most notable painting'.
