Why it matters
A tall dark cypress stands beside a small house in a field of green wheat ripening to yellow, under a blue sky with clouds. Van Gogh painted it in June 1889, just days after he was allowed to paint outdoors again at the asylum in Saint-Rémy.
Did you know?
- He described it to his sister Wil, comparing the ears of wheat to 'the crust of a loaf of bread'.
- He sent an ink drawing of it to Theo in July 1889.
- In Prague it is known as Zelené obilí, 'Green wheat'.
