Why it matters

A lone attendant works at the pumps of a roadside Mobil station as evening falls, its lights contrasting with the dark forest beyond. Hopper had long wanted to paint the motif, but struggled because local stations switched their lights on only when it was pitch dark.

Did you know?

  • It was painted in 1940.
  • The station is a composite of several Hopper had visited.
  • It is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
