Why it matters

Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, plays the flute at an evening concert at Sanssouci, his summer palace at Potsdam. Menzel painted the 18th-century soirée in a painterly, pre-impressionistic style; several of his paintings and book illustrations are devoted to the king's life.
