Why it matters

Cannonballs lie scattered on a road in a Crimean valley. Taken on 23 April 1855, it is one of the best-known images of war, and whether it was staged has long been debated.

Did you know?

  • Fenton took 360 photographs of the Crimean War.
  • Soldiers called the spot the Valley of Death because it was under constant shelling.
  • Errol Morris found that a version without cannonballs on the road was taken first.
