Why it matters

A huge wave of green onyx is about to crash over three small bronze bathers holding hands. Made after Claudel freed herself from Rodin's influence, it is recognised as one of her masterpieces.

Did you know?

  • A plaster version was shown at the Salon in 1897.
  • The onyx and bronze versions date from 1898 to 1903.
  • It is in the Musée Rodin.
