Why it matters

A naked woman lies on a sofa in the middle of a moonlit jungle, surrounded by lions, an elephant, monkeys and a snake charmer playing his flute. Rousseau's last completed work, it was praised by Apollinaire: 'I believe nobody will laugh this year.'

  • It was painted in 1910, a few months before Rousseau's death.
