Why it matters
Christ visits the sisters Martha and Mary, with Mary sitting at his feet. It is Vermeer's largest painting and one of very few with an openly religious subject.
Did you know?
- It was finished in 1655.
- It is also called Christ in the House of Mary and Martha.
- Instead of his usual ultramarine, Vermeer painted Christ's robe in a mix of smalt, indigo and lead white.
