Why it matters
Tangled tree roots and trunks fill a wide canvas in bright colour, so abstract that the subject is hard to make out. Painted in Auvers in July 1890, it is probably Van Gogh's last painting.
Did you know?
- It is one of the double-square canvases of his last landscapes.
- It was among 20 paintings stolen from the Van Gogh Museum in 1991, and was recovered.
- In 2020 its probable location was identified from an old postcard.
